1. Empower Students. Ensure content knowledge is the student’s responsibility and the family exploration prompt does not ask parents to “teach” subjects or skills that they are not prepared to teach.
2. Designate Roles. Make sure directions clearly lay out the role the student is taking and the role the family partner is taking.
3. Limit Materials. Any supplies that are required for a prompt should be materials that any family could easily access without additional cost.
4. Go Low Tech. Make sure explorations can be completed without additional technology. There will be some students who will need a printed version if their family does not have internet or access to a phone with a data plan.
5. Define Terms. Use language that is accessible for parents and includes definitions for any content specific terms that could cause confusion.
6. Use Inclusive Language. Prompts should be sensitive to students who may have tough home situations (ensure that family-oriented questions could apply to students in foster situations or students working with a non-direct family partner).
